Showdown at Somerby Canceled

The Rochester Post Bulletin reported last week that the Nationwide Tour’s 2007 Showdown at Somerby event was the last. This was the second year at the Byron course just outside of Rochester, but lack of sponsorship money forced the cancellation for at least the foreseeable future.

Jim Lehman’s firm SFX Golf tried to secure a lead sponsor willing to sign a three-year contract, but that did not materialize. Attendance for the event was 32,000 in 2006 and dropped to 27,500 in 2007.

Prior to Somerby, the Nationwide Tour played a regional event at Troy Burne south of Hudson. It is not clear yet if the PGA will attempt to find another Minnesota course to host a Nationwide Event, but the prospects for the next few years don’t appear promising.
