Double Red Cell Donation

Posted Friday, February 24th, 2012 05:26 pm GMT -5 in Personal at 5:26 PM

Today I drove over to the Bloomington Memorial Blood Center to make up for the bloodmobile visit at work I had to skip a few weeks ago due to having a cold. That was also the week we had bartender training, so they probably wouldn’t have wanted my alcohol-infused blood then anyways.

When I called to make the appointment, the scheduler asked if I had ever done a double red cell donation. Nope – never even heard of it before. He explained it to me and asked if I would be willing to try. I wasn’t wild about it, but anything for a good cause, right?

I started donating blood through Memorial back when I worked for Northwest Airlines. They had a mobile bloodmobile that visited my building on a semi-regular basis and it basically became a case of peer pressure with the other managers to sign up. I hate needles and the sights and sensations of donating blood aren’t exactly my favorite thing, but I probably did it about five times.

Fast forward to my current job at Fortune Bay, where I found out that the very same Memorial bloodmobile visits about every six months. All of the directors and managers are also hit up with the peer pressure angle, so I started to donate again there. The first time went smoothly, but I had an episode the second time that required the attention of our emergency responder. Embarrassing.

Today’s experience was similar to a whole blood donation, but it made me much more uncomfortable by the end. Everything starts the same, but they leave the needle exposed so the fluid movement can be observed. After the first extraction, the blood pressure cuff automatically loosens and you are told not to squeeze your fist. The machine separates the red blood cells out, then pumps everything else back into your arm. Once it finishes that, the process starts over again (four total cycles in my case).

The sensation of the fluid moving back into my arm was a little weird, but the feeling that drove me crazy was a vibration of the needle that happened both ways. The nurse said that was normal, although she taped it up as much as she could. Thankfully it wasn’t constant, but the whole process took longer than a normal donation, so I was very, very glad when it finally ended.

The upside to this type of donation is that since more of the fluid is returned to your body, your chances of feeling lightheaded afterwards are much lower. I felt fine right away, but still grabbed the traditional juice and cookie before driving home…

Back to training mode

Posted Monday, February 20th, 2012 09:02 pm GMT -5 in Casinos,Marathons,Running at 9:02 PM

Last night I pulled the trigger on registering for the next long race I plan to run – the Fargo Marathon, which will be held on Saturday, May 19 at 8:15AM. The fast, flat course starts and ends at the Fargodome and has received good reviews on MarathonGuide.com.

The 2012 edition will be the eighth running and it sounds like the marathon field is much smaller than half, which should be interesting. Still need to book a hotel room for Friday – the whole family will come with and we’ll probably leave right after school.

So I’m now officially back in training mode. I plan to up my minimum treadmill runs during the week from 5K to 8K (or 10K if I can stand it) and will start regular weekend long runs in Minneapolis again. If the weather continues to cooperate, I may try to do more outdoor running in the Northland too.

This week is also tech training week, as we have three days of kiosk training scheduled Tuesday-Thursday with a vendor from Las Vegas (the “kiosk whisperer”). Our formal meeting rooms were all booked, so we actually have some tables set up in a back storage area. Classy, no?

A Stop at the Antique Mall in Saint Paul

Posted Saturday, February 11th, 2012 01:38 pm GMT -5 in Family,Pop Culture at 1:38 PM

While driving yesterday with kid two in Saint Paul, she says “Before I die, I want to go to an antique store.” A block later, we passed the Mall of St. Paul (aka the Antique Mall). Located on the corner of Selby and Fairview, I’ve probably driven by that place a thousand times, but never went in. Until now.

The place was huge – two sides on the first floor, plus a large basement jammed floor to ceiling with a lot of junk, er, treasure. The kid was in heaven, grinning from ear to ear the entire two hours we spent browsing.

We ended up only spending three dollars this time, but the kid said all she wants for Christmas is money to spend there. I was a little sad to find a lot of things there I remembered from growing up, but it was cool too. A few samples:

Dinner at Kyoto Sushi and Hibachi

Posted Friday, February 10th, 2012 08:14 pm GMT -5 in Food at 8:14 PM

Well, I managed to go three-for-three today, eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I generally do that all week at work, so I try not to do it on weekends too, but what can I say…

Tonight Colleen and I decided to try something the kids would hate, since one is on a sleepover and the other is out with the grandparents. We decided to try a Japanese place in Eagan, Kyoto Sushi and Hibachi, located in Town Centre, across from Best Buy.

The parking lot was fairly full and so was the restaurant. The all-you-can-eat option seems to be the big draw, but since neither of us really likes sushi, we decided to order off the menu.

Colleen started with an appetizer of shrimp tempura ($7.95, huge portions), followed by an order of fried rice with no egg, which she said was a seven on a 1-10 scale.

I ordered the beef with vegetable teriyaki ($10.95, pictured above), which came with what I think was miso soup, a simple salad with a milky dressing and a side of steamed rice. The meat was very tender and flavorful and I enjoyed both the soup and salad.

The service was very good – we told our waitress this was our first time there and she patiently spent time explaining all of the options to us (including the all-you-can-eat procedure). Empty plates disappeared from the table in the blink of an eye and she was very observant with drink refills (one of my favorite traits).

I always wonder a bit about sushi places in the midwest (and particularly the suburban varieties), but Kyoto seems to be pretty solid.

Dinner at Republic Seven Corners

Posted Thursday, February 9th, 2012 07:55 pm GMT -5 in Family,Food at 7:55 PM

Tonight we squeezed in a quick happy hour visit to Republic, located at Seven Corners in Minneapolis. The specials run from 4-6 and the place was packed. Given the close proximity to the U of M west bank, that’s not too surprising.

Colleen wanted to try the $6 turkey burger, which she said was good, but not good enough to knock off her favorite (which is still, somewhat surprisingly, Red Robin). Kid one had a so-so hanger steak and kid two just had fries. I ordered some fish and chips, which had a very heavy, peppery breading that I ended up removing and discarding. The chips were pretty awesome, though.

It’s funny how much that part of town has changed. The old Grandma’s building is completely gone, the Carlson School looks totally different from when I went there and Republic used to Sergeant Prestons (I think). One thing that hasn’t changed? Traffic still sucks as much as ever…

They will start serving me vodka cranberries at 1PM and monitor my blood alcohol level as the afternoon goes on. Since I’m staying in the resort this week, I was an ideal candidate for this session.

I also will find out shortly if I get to go to Vegas next month for a conference about online gaming. Not sure how much cooler this job can get – although I did miss out on the International Bikini Team last weekend…
