Initial Impressions of the Cosmopolitan

Posted Sunday, September 30th, 2012 05:17 pm GMT -5 in Casinos,Travel at 5:17 PM

I was really looking forward to this hotel stay. The newest hotel on the Strip still has a buzz and room prices and occupancy rates have stayed high. I’ve walked through it many times and have visited several of the restaurants before, but today I got to check in to an actual room. Some initial thoughts:

  • I hit the check-in area early, as I took the first flight from MSP. The bell desk was efficient and friendly and took care of my bags until a room was ready.
  • The check-in agent did a “pre-check” and gave me card keys. She said they would call me when my room was ready, which would have been great if the cards actually opened the door – had to go all the way back to the lobby to get that resolved.
  • Their casino floor seems a little sparse for some reason – almost like some space isn’t being used right now. Holds must be high, though – not a lot of luck so far.
  • Food is still as good as ever (although I had to wait until 11 to get lunch).
  • The room is pretty cool looking – nice design, W-like quirky furnishings, music playing when I entered, glass shower that opens to the main room and pretty nice technology (large HDTV, touch panel room controls, lots of power plugs, etc.).
  • The TV lost signal a few times, but messing with the cables in back seemed to fix it.
  • 59 floors is really high up, but I’m facing the boring south side. I also thought every room had a balcony? Glad I don’t though, as that would totally freak me out.

A few more pictures after the jump.

Olivia Newton-John at the Guthrie

Posted Wednesday, September 26th, 2012 12:31 am GMT -5 in Concerts,Food at 12:31 AM

When Colleen won tickets to see my teen crush, I didn’t really care that the show was on a Monday night – I needed to go. Plus it was at the Wurtele Thrust stage in the beautiful new Guthrie and our friends Cathy and John were already planning to go, so why not?

We met the Shusters for dinner before the show at Kindee Thai across from the theater. My chicken satay, cream cheese wontons and pineapple fried rice with dried cranberry, cashew nuts, egg and green onion were very tasty.

The show started right on time and the 63-year-old (now 64) Koala Blue co-founder played for a little more than 90 minutes. I don’t have a set list, but she played songs from her early albums, a little country, three songs from Xanadu, several Grease hits and a couple newer ballads.

A few I remember (in no particular order):

  • Have You Never Been Mellow
  • I Honestly Love You
  • You’re the One That I Want
  • Magic
  • Physical
  • Jolene
  • Take Me Home, Country Roads
  • Hopelessly Devoted To You
  • Suddenly
  • Please Mr. Please
  • Summer Nights
  • Grace and Gratitude

She will actually be at Black Bear on Wednesday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m. if you want to catch her again in Minnesota.

Ten Weeks of Training

Ten down, six to go…

The switch back to a more cushioned shoe seems to be paying off in the knee pain department. Due to the busy high school reunion schedule, I had to compress runs in a three day window, running 9 on Friday, 10 on Saturday and 20 on Sunday (43 total miles for week ten).

Week eleven is almost exactly the same, but with travel for work on Sunday, the long run will have to move up a day. Anxious to see how the short four miles feels tonight, but I’m cautiously optimistic that the worst of the pain is behind me…

Week Nine Training Update

Posted Monday, September 17th, 2012 10:26 am GMT -5 in Marathons,Running at 10:26 AM

The 42 miles scheduled for week nine were a challenge to fit in, but every mile eventually was run in one form or another. I’ve decided to scale back the speed work, as that seems to aggravate my knee. The doctor also said to ease up on hills, but quite a few still seemed to sneak in on various routes.

I decided to switch back to my Mizuno Wave Rider 15s from the Saucony Kinvara 3s, even though I was sure the red monsters contributed to my initial knee injury in May. New Wave Rider 16s (above) are expected to launch in November, but that will be too late for the next race. If anybody from Mizuno sees this and wants to send an advance pair of size 9s to my attention at Fortune Bay, though, please be my guest…

43 miles on tap for this week – fingers crossed for no knee pain or new blisters. Plans for my November race are starting to come together, although it’s tough trying to figure it all out without spending any money. Hurray for friends and frequent flier points!

Atmosphere at The Cabooze Plaza

Posted Sunday, September 9th, 2012 09:02 pm GMT -5 in Concerts,Family,Music at 9:02 PM

Nice outdoor venue, great fall weather and a well-behaved all ages crowd showed up for the Atmosphere show last Friday at The Cabooze Plaza. Kid one and I were surprised to see Slug out front before the show greeting fans and posing for pictures, but she was too freaked out to meet him (again).

City Pages cover boy Carnage the Executioner opened the show and reminded me of a hip-hop version of tUnE-yArDs. We both liked him and would’ve gone to see more at the Triple Rock release party that night, but it was an 18+ event.

I Self Devine was up next and performed an entertaining set. They started off by bringing out the birthday boy and having everyone wish him a happy 40th birthday. There was one song of theirs that had lyrics I particularly liked, but I couldn’t find it online.

Atmosphere started right at 8:15 and had a two-song encore that started with him bringing out his young son during Something So. I tried to get the setlist, but was a little late (even though I stood by the soundboard for the whole show). Kid one said it wasn’t as good as Red Rocks, but I enjoyed it. The Strib music writer said on Twitter they played some rarities (Shoes and Millennium Dodo) and that Slug promised a free local show in October.

We waited to buy T-shirts after the show (which weren’t overpriced) and then got some pizza and pop from their outdoor stand (also good values at $1 per can and $4 per slice). We parked at the overflow lot off of Franklin, which was very convenient (and free).

Up next: David Byrne at McNally Smith next Friday.

UPDATE: The Star Tribune review is up.
