December Will Be Magic Again

Posted Tuesday, November 27th, 2012 08:46 pm GMT -5 in Personal at 8:46 PM

It’s been a while since I’ve done an update post and I could use a writing workout, so here we are.

Seems like it’s been the season of bummers: the New York cancellation, the onset of winter (with the cold and darkness), missing family and friends, lingering health issues, the never-ending housing saga. In fact, I’d say things have sucked in general since I turned 40. Maybe the 50s will be better – all those old guys seem pretty happy. Either that or they’ve just lost their minds…

But enough downer talk, what’s on the horizon?

Work has been engaging, with several large projects on the white board and some big picture strategic planning to go along with lots of web development and social media items. We lost one of my friends to a property in Kansas, but he’s extended an open invitation to play their awesome golf course whenever I want. Still miss him here, though.

Trying real hard to keep in running shape, but I just can’t get into outdoor winter running. I follow several Minnesota runners on Twitter who love it, but…no. The resort treadmill is tolerable (8-10K max) and I’m hoping the girls will help me become a better swimmer over Christmas break. Next registered road races are in January (26.2) and April (10K); after that will depend on what NYC decides. Anybody home, NYRR?

Speaking of the swimmers, I really miss them during the week: attending awards ceremonies and swim practices and debates – all of it. Facetime is great, but I wish they were here or I was there. That said, they also drive me crazy and this boyfriend thing needs to go away until they move out. And stop texting and liking everything, K?

No big plans for the holidays. With the housing and financial uncertainty, I’m not even sure if we’ll have a tree this year. Other traditions will still make an appearance, though, and I’ll work New Year’s Eve at the resort (sadly without the4onthefloor).

That’s it for now. I could write more, but I better keep my foot away from my mouth.

Cheers from Vermilion!

WordPress Pagination Issue

Posted Saturday, November 17th, 2012 01:26 am GMT -5 in Housekeeping,Technology at 1:26 AM

Not sure when it started happening, but if you scroll to the bottom of the 7minutemiles.com home page and hover over the “Older posts” link, the URL shows as 7minutemiles.com/page/2. My web server, though, is redirecting that back to 7minutemiles.com via an Apache 301 redirect. Not good.

The older posts can be viewed by using a different URL – 7minutemiles.com/?paged=2 for the second page of posts, 7minutemiles.com/?paged=3 for the third page, and so on. So at least I know they are still there.

This type of problem is usually related to the Permalinks section in WordPress Settings and the .htaccess file it manipulates. I checked out the current .htaccess file, recreated it, restored an old version from backup to compare and tried various structural settings within the admin section (default works, but I want my standard day and name URLs that match what Google has indexed).

What’s weird is that pagination within category pages works fine (i.e. – 7minutemiles.com/category/golf/page/2 for example). My web server log isn’t throwing any errors and seems to be configured the same as it ever was (no recent upgrades). I did have a few Jetpack plugin upgrades recently, but deactivating that made no difference. I’m also not using any add-in pagination plugins.

A WordPress support site had a few threads mentioning that the 3.4 upgrade changed some things with pagination, but I’m pretty sure it was working since I moved to the 3.4.x series (currently on 3.4.2). My issue is a little different than that post, plus you wouldn’t think you’d need a function.php fix for basic pagination on the home page. Here is my theme PHP code that generates the link:

next_posts_link('« Older posts')

That generates the right URL, so I’m confused as to whether this is a WordPress issue or an Apache issue. Guess I’ll look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow…

Minneapolis has a beef with RNDM

Posted Friday, November 16th, 2012 12:39 pm GMT -5 in Concerts,Music at 12:39 PM

After the sold out Grieves show, it was quite a shock to arrive at First Avenue to find no one standing outside and perhaps 75 people inside last night for the RNDM show. Tickets were relatively cheap, so I thought there would be way more Pearl Jam fans there to see bassist Jeff Ament. There was no attempt to hide who he was (aside from the rather funny hats), so the low turnout was really a surprise.

RNDM’s 12 song album Acts hasn’t been out long, and truth be told, I hadn’t heard a single song off of it before the concert. I thought they were a good live act – lead singer and guitarist Joseph Arthur didn’t say much of anything between songs, but drummer Richard Stuverud’s facial expressions were extremely entertaining. Also loved his “drummer for RNDM” T-shirt, with the arrow pointing to his face.

Jeff didn’t say much either the whole night and hardly smiled at all. The only time I can recall was during the encore, when they brought up a Minneapolis special guest to play on one song (Craig Johnson?). Didn’t get a set list and I’m pretty sure none of the music reporters were there.

It was just so weird how empty the place was. We stood about three feet from the stage (in front of Joe) and had plenty of space around us. His monitor was so loud, though, that it was hard to hear the other two. Such a different sonic experience from my usual front of soundboard spot.

Up next: Doomtree Blowout 8 on 12/16.

I was walking along the road with two of my friends. The sun set – the sky became a bloody red. And I felt a touch of meloncholy – I stood still, dead tired – over the blue-black fjord and city hung blood and tongues of fire. My friends walked on – I stayed behind – trembling with fright – I felt the great scream in nature.
