Dinner at Burch Steak

Last night Colleen and I tried out the new Isaac Becker place in Minneapolis, Burch. Located just south of the Walker on Hennepin, we had 7:30 dinner reservations at the upstairs steakhouse (we did not check out the basement pizza bar).

The room is comfortable and hard to picture as the pharmacy it used to be in a former life. We had a table near the open kitchen, which was just fascinating to watch. It’s a loud room – I didn’t even notice they were playing music until the room started to empty. Colleen liked the lighting and the exposed brick walls added a historic touch.

For drinks, we orderded a lemon martini and a Burch penicillin (I wanted a little Laphroaig), which was followed by a nice assorted bread plate. Colleen started with the soup of the day and I had the Belgian endive salad with buttermilk, blue cheese and the most amazing little chunks of bacon.

Since Colleen isn’t a big steak person, she ordered the market fish, which was rainbow trout wrapped in bacon. I had difficulty deciding among the three steak sections: 100% grass fed, natural and prime. I ended up with an 8 ounce grass-fed filet, which was one of the tenderest steaks I’ve ever had. It came with their house-made steak sauce, some BĂ©arnaise and a bowl full of mushrooms. The triple cooked chips with mayo were a unique take on the fry – crisp, hot, salty and absolutely wonderful.

Colleen ordered some coconut cake to go, while I sat and ate my flourless chocolate torte there. It was also very good – in fact, I can’t decide what I liked best at Burch. I’ll have to book a return visit soon with kid one, the steak lover…
