Har Mar Superstar at Turf Club

It seems hard to believe that a music fan growing up in St. Paul could somehow never see a show at the Turf Club on University Avenue, but that’s exactly what I did. At least until Saturday night, that is.

Colleen had picked up a pair of tickets to see Har Mar Superstar for the grand total of $25.10, including fees. We missed the opening act and caught the last few songs from Baby Boy, which features Har Mar’s guitarist Jeff “Catfish” Quinn. They seemed to be enjoying themselves a great deal, which carried over to the sold out crowd.

Har Mar was supposed to start at midnight, with a special surprise guest at 11. That turned out to be The Chalice – a Current birthday party act from the night we missed. DJ Spacebar with her MPLS Love shirt and old MacBook was my favorite part of their set, but all three singers were strong too.

When Mr. Tillman took the stage around 12:15, the room was ready. It also seems hard to believe I’ve never seen him live before, but his act was even better in person than I imagined. His older material has always been fun, but the new soulful album really brought down the house. I wasn’t sure if he could deliver live on Lady, You Shot Me, but holy smokes!

A few other highlights: Prisoner, Restless Leg (“About my dick!”), www, Don’t Make Me Hit You, DUI and Tall Boy. More info (and photos) from the Current blog here.

Oh, and he kept his pants on too…
