Pearl Jam at Xcel Energy Center

Posted Monday, October 20th, 2014 08:14 pm GMT -5 in Concerts,Music at 8:14 PM

How can it possibly be eight years since Pearl Jam was at Xcel with Tom Petty? We’ve seen both a number of times since then, but none in Minnesota. Colleen had tried to order Ten Club tickets for both Moline and St. Paul, but all she got was the latter (with the usual process of not knowing where exactly your seats would be until the day of the show). Halfway up section 117 wasn’t the best available non-GA area, but they were still pretty good. Apparently reserved fan club seats are assigned according to seniority and Colleen is “only” at ten years or so, since she dropped her membership for a few years when the girls were born.

The club had sent out an email earlier in the day showing a map indicting the location of the outdoor merchandise trailer (just like OKC), including a stated opening time of 1pm. She went down early to take a look and found a line already two blocks long. She waited and waited – they finally opened one window around 2:15, but it moved very slowly and she had to leave to avoid a parking ticket. Doors were scheduled for 6:30, so we both came back around 5:30 to wait in the will call fan club line, but that part was awesome – no line and we got to sit in the foyer by gate one and listen to sound check.

There were two merch booths inside gate one, so we headed straight there once our tickets were scanned. I picked up the cool St. Paul poster for $35 (plus a very reasonable $2 for a nice cardboard poster tube). Colleen got a red tour shirt, a button and a couple of stickers. We also picked up some mini donuts and a couple Cokes on the way to our seats. We settled in, expecting the show to start right away at 7:30 (no opening act). Roughly 45 minutes later, the band finally started off with Pendulum from the latest album. The lighting for the first few songs was just like Oklahoma – each musician was basically in the dark and difficult to see. The two video screens has some serious low-light cameras, though, which was great. The video production all night was very artsy and cool, providing unique, interesting views you don’t normally see (wide angle lens from the guitar pedals, for example).

This was definitely one of those “get your money’s worth” type of shows, with three plus hours of music and 32 songs in total. All of the reviews I saw were positive (Chris here, Ross here and City Pages here). I’m guessing Corduroy was probably the highlight for Colleen, as they haven’t been playing that one a lot lately. I was holding out for Black, which opened the second encore. Overall, I felt the setlist had a really nice mix of new and old, popular and obscure. No sound issues this time, either (thank goodness).

Such fun music times, no?

Set list (per Riemenschneider):

Dinner at Heyday

Posted Sunday, October 19th, 2014 12:04 am GMT -5 in Food at 12:04 AM

Lorin Zinter, co-owner of the new Heyday restaurant in Minneapolis, gets social media. Long before the place opened, the @heydaympls Twitter account launched and got my attention by following me before I knew it existed. I seem to recall chef Jim Christiansen did the same thing to me while he was at Union. When I tweeted we were there Friday night for dinner, not only did @lorinzinter reply, he found us in real life and stopped over at our table to say hi. Perfect.

Lots of great pedigree at Heyday from La Belle Vie, Sea Change and Union. Diane Yang was also a part of the team before Gavin Kaysen stole her away for his new Merchant. I’d love to know if the spectacular shaved Gruyère was her creation – that was one of the best, most unique desserts we’ve experienced in a long time.

The building is located at 2700 Lyndale – practically across the street from Sameh Wadi’s World Street Kitchen. We loved the space: half bar and half dining room, with tall ceilings and wood beams to keep noise in check. We also liked the marble table tops, church pew benches, fun artwork and creative light fixtures. We arrived a bit early for our reservation and the friendly hostess was eager to accommodate us without having to wait at the bar. It was also really nice to have space between the tables (hello, Butcher and the Boar).

We skipped the wine menu on this visit and went right to the cocktails. The Bitter Lord was calling my name (bourbon, grenadine and lemon) and didn’t disappoint. I ordered a second one and Colleen ended up with one also (after starting with the house made sangria). They serve water from old wine bottles and bread and butter is available upon request (definitely request it – the sourdough was hot and the little whole wheat muffins were great).

Our server was very knowledgable about the menu and recommended ordering 2-3 items per person to share. We started with:

Apple and Camembert | 9
radish, hazelnut, pork vinaigrette

Chicken Liver Tart | 10
toasted shallot, green tomato jam, pickled vegetables

I ate most of the apple dish, which was just beautiful. I’m not sure how they slice those apples so thin, but the combination of flavors was great. Colleen loved the chicken liver tart, calling it both “an orgasm on a plate” and “one of the five best dishes I’ve had this year.” It seemed almost too pretty to eat.

For our main course, we selected:

Grilled Mackerel | 15
celery broth, guanciale, brioche

Rabbit Royale | 16
grilled leg, ham, carrots

Each dish was good, but both of us liked the fish more. I’m not sure if I’ve had rabbit before, but it tasted a little different than I was expecting. I saw another plate of it in the kitchen when we were leaving that looked quite a bit different, so maybe we just had an off cut. The dessert I mentioned earlier, though, was probably my favorite thing all night. It was like a tasty Cousin Itt – the toast, honey and walnuts were all hidden inside the huge pile of finely grated cheese. Completely not the presentation I expected when I ordered Itt.

I originally wanted to call Heyday the love child of Piccolo and The Bachelor Farmer, but Colleen said Heyday is Heyday. Either way, it’s a great addition to the Twin Cities dining scene. The night was a bargain too – only $90 before tax and tip.

Highly Recommended
