7 Minute Miles

Jim-less Robert Cray at the Zoo

This week I learned that Robert Cray was the uncredited bassist in the house party band from National Lampoon’s Animal House and then remembered I never finished writing my post of his last concert at the Minnesota Zoo. Looking on the calendar, that show was three months ago.

Yikes.

My ever increasing blog procrastination of course means I don’t really remember much about the show. I do recall that Sonny Landreth was the opener (again) and we were shocked to find someone else behind the keyboards. We’ve seen Mr. Cray multiple times (seven?) and always really loved listening to Jim Pugh play his Hammond organ. According to the official website, Jim was in the band from 1989 to 2014, with self-proclaimed “Blues Slut” Dover Weinberg now in that spot. Les Falconer remains on drums, with Richard Cousins still on bass.

It’s amazing to me that Robert Cray is now 62 years old and is releasing another live double album and DVD to celebrate 40 years of music. There’s still hope for this whole aging business, no?
