Dinner at 112 Eatery

Posted Wednesday, November 30th, 2016 10:32 pm GMT -5 in Family,Food at 10:32 PM

Not sure why it took us so long to visit Isaac Becker’s 112 Eatery – it’s been on my list for ages, we’ve been to his newer Bar La Grassa and Burch multiple times and he’s a freakin’ James Beard award-winner, for crying out loud. And tonight it actually happened by accident: we had planned to grab a bar or lounge seat at Saffron across the street (before they close for good on Saturday), but couldn’t get in.

We actually couldn’t get a table at 112 either, but lucked out on two bar seats after a very short wait. John the bartender took good care of us and we had a very nice recovery night out. For drinks, Colleen had a cider from Cold Spring, Minnesota called Milk & Honey, while I had an amazing twist on straight up bourbon called brown butter bourbon. It smelled like caramel corn and felt like it was going to burn through the roof of my mouth – tremendous.

We only had time for two courses, so I started with the Boston Bibb salad with fine herb vinaigrette and parm ($10), which I’m going to call the “Cousin It” salad. Bachelor Farmer still has my all-time favorite salad, but this one was very close. Colleen ordered the salted cucumbers with avocado & orange ($8), which she said was one of the best dishes she’s had all year.

For the main course, Colleen ordered the duck breast with red miso & shiitakes ($27), while I had the pan-roasted short rib with sweet rice cacio e pepe ($25). Both were very good, but did take a while to arrive. Service from John was great, however, and we really liked the overall atmosphere of the room. Too bad we didn’t have time for dessert – they all sounded wonderful. Next time…

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Gary Clark Jr. at First Avenue

Posted Sunday, November 27th, 2016 10:20 pm GMT -5 in Concerts,Family,Music at 10:20 PM

Jumping back into the pile of old concert review drafts, here’s one from April 2, 2016, when we went to see Gary Clark, Jr. at First Avenue for his The Story of Sonny Boy Slim tour. We didn’t see him the first time he came through town solo in 2013, so we were really looking forward to this show (plus the $37.50 tickets went on sale like nine months earlier). Carson McHone was the opener, but I think we got there late and ended up with a crappy spot in the back corner of the floor, so I don’t recall much about her set.

To be honest, I’m a much bigger fan of Blak and Blu than I am of the new album. Still, Mr. Clark is an amazing musician and it was great to see him at my favorite venue. He came back to play the Basilica Block Party again later in the year, but we always seem to have conflicts with that event (and I’ve still never been to one). Can’t seem to find a full set list anywhere online, but here is the Riemenschneider review from the Strib. A few pics after the jump too.

Babes in Toyland at First Ave

Posted Tuesday, November 15th, 2016 08:15 pm GMT -5 in Concerts,Family,Music at 8:15 PM

Digging into the backlog of concert posts, here’s one from a show way back in January (1/30/2016, to be exact). I was really excited to see the reunited Babes in Toyland at First Avenue, especially after hearing great things about their 2015 Rock the Garden gig. Kat Bjelland and Lori Barbero didn’t disappoint, bringing the fierceness that made them a favorite of Beavis and Butthead. New bass player Clara Salyer fit in just fine and opener Kitten Forever set the tone early, jumping between roles in classic girl punk style. Read more in this blog post from Twin Cities Media, which also provided a set list.

One side note – we were supposed to see Babes again as part of a Lowertown Line taping on October 20th, but they cancelled just a few days before (Bruise Violet took their place and kicked ass). More pics and the set list after the jump.

A full year of stadium life

Posted Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016 07:34 pm GMT -5 in Football,Personal,Technology,Work at 7:34 PM

Today is my one year anniversary as IT director at that little building in downtown Minneapolis. This timing also corresponded to an all-staff task of writing individual reviews of what we’ve accomplished in the past year and I found the exercise a fun way to self-reflect. It’s really amazing how much progress has occurred, both physically with the building and professionally with our team.

There are still many things that need to be done, but I’m happy with where my group stands right now. We learn from every event and will get better and more efficient as we gain knowledge from what are some really unique and exciting experiences. It’s stressful and time-consuming, to be sure, but it’s also rewarding in ways that are unlike anything else I’ve seen during my career.

As I wrote in my review, this role is challenging on many levels: multiple partner organizations, political pressures, limited staffing resources, event-driven scheduling, a vast physical environment and multiple, complex systems. On the technology side of things, I get to work in familiar areas like networking, telephone systems, digital signage, mobile devices and workstations. But everything in the building is larger than life, so I’ve learned a lot about scaling and performance (especially with WiFi and cloud-based tools).

Technology is great, but I really feel that communication and customer service are just as important (if not more). With so many different groups in this project, it’s crucial that we manage those relationships properly to be successful. Everyone is important: the guests that pay to attend events, the state officials that entrust us to operate the building, the vendors that have provided the tools we use, the partner organizations that provide complimentary services, the team members on our own staff and, of course, the primary tenant that drives so many key decisions.

I’m very proud of the technology support team we’ve built so far. My one full-timer was a wonderful find (thanks Pash) and is rapidly developing into an all-star on par with the best I’ve had the pleasure of working with in the past. Our part-time event staff is vastly over-qualified for the tasks I ask them to perform, but it’s nice to know all that brain-power is there if we need it.

Lastly, I’m proud of the Skol Service pin I was awarded after a very long game day (see above). Staff recognition often gets overlooked, but even small tokens of appreciation like this can go a long ways in keeping people motivated and focused on providing excellent service. Excited to see what the next 365 days have in store…
