When I heard that Mia was doing a Guillermo del Toro exhibition, I immediately thought of Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy and was super excited to go see it. Once I got there, I realized 1) there are a bunch of del Toro movies I’ve never seen and 2) everyone in Minneapolis seems to love the guy – it was absolutely packed.
At Home with Monsters is divided into multiple themed rooms that had a mix of movie props and artwork primarily pulled from his personal collection at Bleak House (his home in Los Angeles). It was easy for me to feel a connection to the director: vintage Disney artwork from Mary Blair (and many others), a comic book wall, Ray Harryhausen props, Marlon Brando bronze bust, Edward Gorey prints and a recreation of his personal “rain room” with an Edgar Allen Poe wax figure. How could I not love all that?
