Dr. John at the Zoo

Last night was my first Music in the Zoo concert since the 4onthefloor last year (and my first since iconic promoter Sue McLean passed away). Decent weather and great music led to a full house in Apple Valley, which was much, much older than I was expecting (Riemenschneider review here).

It was fun to see two music icons this month, who both happen to be 72 years old: Dylan was born May 24, 1941, and Dr. John (aka Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr. and/or the Night Tripper) on November 21, 1940. Both have won multiple Grammys, both are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and both move a little slower than they used to.

To be honest, I don’t really know many Dr. John songs. We have the new album, but I haven’t listened to it that much yet. His voice is so distinctive, though, it was easy to get into the show. Plus his band had a Hammond organ – how can you not like a good Hammond organ player (looking at you Jim Pugh). And of course there is Treme, where opener Sonny Landreth has also appeared.

Next show: Alabama Shakes at the Cabooze.
