7 Minute Miles

A Month with the Nikon D600

It’s been almost a month since I upgraded the work camera from a D80 to a D600. I planned to write a longish review, but there isn’t much to say – this is the best camera I’ve ever used, hands down. The 28-300mm glass and full frame sensor capture great images in almost all light situations with little manual adjustment needed.

I took the camera to Florida to get comfortable using it and found it to be a pleasure to use, especially in low light situations when I had to keep the flash off. You can view samples in this gallery, and strangely enough, the Disney Tourist Blog also published a recent review of the D600.

My plan was to get the battery grip when I ordered from B&H, but it was backordered (and still is now). I loved having that on the D80, but almost feel like the D600 will be too big if I add it now. We’ll see on that piece – maybe later. I would like to try out the wireless mobile adapter, though.

I’m not sold on the video recording aspect of it yet. We needed to record some video for a recent event and I purchased the stereo mic that mounts on the flash shoe. The videos turned out OK, but I found it awkward to shoot video with a DSLR body. Maybe I just need to get used to it (or buy a fixed prime lens), but live view shooting still seems weird and hard to control.

Maybe I can get some tips from my Canon friend…
