7 Minute Miles

Glen Hansard at First Avenue

Almost forgot to write this post due to all of the work travel, but last Saturday Colleen and I headed down to First Ave to see Glen Hansard again (he opened for Eddie Vedder last summer on the Ukelele Songs tour).

As Chris Riemenschneider at the Strib reported, there were several great covers of Van Morrison, The Band and James Brown, but my favorite was definitely Sign o’ the Times. Very nicely done – I especially liked the improv into Sexy MF at the end.

It was disappointing not to hear Falling Slowly, but if you can’t have Eddie Vedder or Markéta Irglová to sing with, I guess it’s OK to skip it. It was fun to see such a large backing band, though, and they all seemed to have a great time together. This was the last show for the former Levon Helm brass section before the rest of them left for Canada and we both felt they added a very Tremé feel to several songs.

Guess I need to find some of those old Frames songs now, eh?
