7 Minute Miles

Charlie Parr & Dead Man Winter

Almost forgot to write up this post from last week. I’ve been crossing off several metro clubs I’ve never visited and finally made it to the Cedar Cultural Center to see Charlie and three-fifths of the boys from Trampled By Turtles.

Funny enough, we stopped at the Wienery next door for dinner right before they closed (it was a Sunday, so they shut down at 7) and who walks in behind us, but the guys from Dead Man Winter. I wish I would have picked up their check – always wanted to do that.

The location of the Cedar is conveniently located just across from the new Carlson School parking ramp (and right next to the Wienery), so it was easy in and out, traffic-wise. I liked the interior of the room a lot, with good acoustics and the snack bar in the corner with the iconic lighted sign. I guess they can hold about 600 people standing and I’d say there were about 400-450 in attendance for this show.

Colleen talked to Charlie before his set about the movie premiere about him in Europe and he hung out near us while DMW performed. We also met him at the Minnesota Zoo when he performed with the 4onthefloor – super nice person and excellent performer.

Charlie opened the show solo acoustic and played one song with banjo, which was probably the highlight for me. DMW came out and joined Charlie for a number of songs before a brief intermission. They then came back and played a number of Turtles songs and guitarist Erik Koskinen played one of his too (hope he returns to Nye’s sometime).

Cool show, cool place. Be sure and read Chris’s recent Strib profile about their young booking agent and the 25th anniversary too…
