🫑 Being social, an update

Posted September 14, 2023

In my July 2023 post the art of being social, I wrote about the current state of social media and how things had changed for me personally with the deletion of my Twitter account and how I was using Mastodon as my primary remaining service. After finally getting an invite code to Bluesky, I’ve lurked on there for a few weeks now too. Here are a few updated thoughts:

  • Aside from the presence of a few old Twitter people, not finding a lot of value so far in Bluesky.
  • Looked at Threads and saw I needed to create a new Instagram account, so I deleted the app.
  • Mastodon via Ivory still works great for me across iOS and macOS, but I’m finding that the time required to keep up isn’t equal to the value I’m getting out of the posts. Will curate my follow list and see if that helps.
  • LinkedIn lately has been full of bad takes, unwanted sales generation and (apparently) fraud research, so it might need to go away again soon.
  • Based on recent Google actions, may remove my concert videos from YouTube.

Leaning towards 7minutemiles being the exclusive, definitive source of online DK information soon…

🫑 Apple Fall Event 2023

Posted September 12, 2023

No shortage of opinions on today’s Apple Event, but here are my immediate action items:

  • Will move from my 14 Pro to the 15 Pro Max via the iPhone Upgrade Program on Friday (256GB Blue Titanium)
  • Still want an Ultra 2, but don’t like the new bands – will stick with my Series 5 for now (and might actually prefer a Series 9 with a Nike band)
  • Need to find out the pricing on the new iCloud+ 6TB and 12TB storage tiers (and how that ties in with Apple One) – rumor is $30/month and $60/month
  • AirPods Pro cases get USB-C on September 22, but I will still probably wait for the 2nd edition of AirPods Max

🫑 TC 10 Mile training update

Posted September 2, 2023

Finished my third eight mile long run this morning and kept the average pace under 11 for the second time in this training cycle (10:44). Slow and steady with no walk breaks is fine with me right now. On my bike ride two days ago, I made it up the giant hill (200+ ft) with no stop breaks, so seem to be making overall fitness progress. Only 29 days to race day!

🫑 MOR TV Shows

Posted September 1, 2023

Just finished season 5 of What We Do in the Shadows (so fun!) and watched the first episode of Disenchantment S5 (out today – love that Matt Berry voices the pig). Also watching Futurama S11, Only Murders in the Building S3, Reservation Dogs S3 and Justified: City Primeval. Looking forward to The Morning Show S3 (Sept 13), Survivor S45 (Sept 27) and Fargo S5 (Nov 21).

🫑 Apple Wonderlust, 9/12 (noon central)

Thinking iPhone 15 Pro Max this time (if the camera rumors are true). Would also go for an Apple Watch Ultra 2 if that’s released. Need to do something about my semi-broken AirPods too…

🫑 Star Tribune Live at the Fair

Posted August 24, 2023

Interesting to me that they are using Threads this year to report the new foods on the first day instead of Twitter or Instagram. Not much new that I’m clamoring for, but still looking forward to my visits on 8/31 and 9/4…

🫑 Return to running milestone

Posted August 1, 2023

Still a lot slower than my prime, but today’s run was my fastest pace in three years. And in a related note, my weight this morning was the lowest it’s been in a year…

🫑 J.T. Poston at the 3M Open

Posted July 31, 2023

Now I’m no golf professional, but I still can’t believe that Poston went for the hero shot on the final hole of the 3M Open yesterday, down three shots to winner Lee Hodges (who had already safely laid up 115 yards out). Poston after the round on Twitter:

Not out here to finish 2nd. Trying to win. Would make that decision 10 times out of 10 under circumstances

That decision cost him $260K – solo second would’ve paid $850K, but the three-way tie for second gave each player $590K.

So unless I’m missing something, he was betting that he could make eagle and that Hodges would put it in the water from 115 yards *plus* not be able to get up and down to force a playoff? πŸ€”

🫑 Sunday morning long runs

Posted July 30, 2023

Slowly building the base for the TC 10 with my training plan. Just finished week five with an 8 mile long run that was slow, but steady (no walk breaks). Thirteen four milers, three six milers and now today (78 total running miles). Two months to race day!

🫑 Bill Holst: Farming, Caviar & Golf

Posted July 17, 2023

This Forbes story on Bill Holst is fascinating. I was already impressed with his accumulation of golf courses (Gopher Hills, Red Wing, Clifton Highlands, Lake City and Troy Burne), but never knew about the caviar.

Would love to see more local reporting with stories like this…

🫑 Women’s Open @ Pebble Beach

Second round leader Bailey Tardy qualified at Somerset Country Club in Mendota Heights, winning a four-hole playoff against Jennifer Chang of North Carolina back on May 22 (after Chang three-putted on the 18th in regulation). Medalist at Somerset was Amy Olson of Fargo, who missed the cut this weekend in California, shooting 79-77-156 (two shots in front of Michele Wie West and three better than Annika Sorenstam).

🫑 Lutsen Mountains Updates

Posted May 7, 2023

In relatively hard to find news, Lutsen Mountains’ last day of the season was April 16th (even though the webcam shows lots of snow still around). They are also replacing the 10th Mountain Chair on Eagle Mountain with a new “Raptor Express” lift (size and type unknown). This project appears to be different than anything in the expansion plan that is still awaiting a decision from the U.S. Forest Service. WTIP reports this should now be announced this summer.
