I’ve been listening to all of the albums this morning, then checked Setlist and Wikipedia. Looks like they haven’t performed together since 2018 (and the last album was 2016). David Huckfelt opened for Richard Thompson at the Fitzgerald in 2021 and seems to pop up around town from time to time (Setlist says he played Icehouse for NYE). Looks like we last saw Benson Ramsey at the Fitz in 2021 (opening for Dave Simonett), but I don’t know what he’s up to these days…
It’s been three weeks now since I stopped wearing my Apple Watch daily. My physical health is holding steady, as I still try to get on the treadmill to walk semi-regularly in this cold weather. My mental health, however, is vastly improved without the stress and anxiety of closing the damn rings. I still use the watch during workouts, but otherwise happy to leave it on the charger for the time being…
Not that it was noticed by anyone but me, but I got caught tonight with a server outage after a system update that I decided to run after the game ended (and I was waiting for traffic in the ramp to clear). Since moving to AWS, my server updates are usually quick and painless, with a few quick Ubuntu commands (and sometimes a restart):
sudo apt update
sudo apt list --upgradable
sudo apt upgrade -y
Tonight, an upgrade to PHP 8.2 removed my MySQL database extension. Googling things like this (and many other things, unfortunately) has gotten pretty bad these days, so it took me a little longer than normal to get back up and running. Thankfully I had some saved notes that helped lead me to the command that fixed it:
sudo apt install php8.2-mysql
It was nice to see my two monitoring tools send me alerts immediately (old standby Uptime Robot and newcomer Jetpack Monitor). Total downtime was just under 20 minutes…
As I wait for Oliver to make it across the Atlantic, I realized as I was driving home this week that next month with mark forty years since I got my learner’s permit to drive. A few observations:
- Mr. Toad isn’t the only one with a mania for motor cars
- Only two moving violations – one in Florida and one in Wisconsin
- My first used car was a Dodge Colt
- Other makes we’ve owned: Oldsmobile, Toyota, Honda (many times) & BMW/Mini
- My parents loved Volkswagens, but I’ve never purchased one
- The new Mini will likely be my last gas engine, manual transmission car
- It’s really a miracle that so many drivers get so many places daily without more accidents
Be safe and motor on…
The phrase has become a clichΓ© in Minnesota, but I still think the namesake song is one of the prettiest that Prince ever produced.
The lottery website has been a disaster today – guess there are a lot of people wanting to enter their losing 2nd chance codes from Christmas scratchers…
Yesterday marked two years in the “new” house and I can’t believe how many walls still don’t have any pictures on them (and how many other items remain on the house to do list). No pressure, though – love the place…
Just went back and re-read my Art of Being Social post from July and the September update post after thinking about the changes I’m now pondering:
- Pause regular reading of Bluesky and LinkedIn
- Further prune my Mastodon follow list
- Remove my concert videos from YouTube and only host here
- Review my paid subscriptions and RSS feeds
The volume of reading has just been too much lately – need to find a better balance, with less noise…
This was my first trip with these new ones and it was truly magical – completely blocked out the screaming baby, the talkative couple behind me and the engine noise. It literally sounded like being in a recording booth. Amazing…

- Hollis Cavner is taking Royal Golf Club private January 1 (and investing $4.5 million for a full-scale restaurant, golf simulators, pickleball courts and upgrades to the clubβs locker rooms). Memberships will be $20,000 for early birds, then jump to $40,000 (with monthly dues of $700).
- Award-winning golf executive Tom Beaudry is leaving Nemadji Golf Course in Superior, Wisconsin, and returning to northern Minnesota next season. Look for Tom in 2024 at historic Pokegama in Grand Rapids.
First time in ages I didn’t have anything scheduled on a Saturday (and the house to myself). Slept in, did chores around the house, watched some TV and picked up a 3 Finger combo from Cane’s. The snow is now falling and the latest puzzle is calling me over to the dining room table…
According to Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, these are the top five routes from MSP this year: DEN (1,114,941 seats), PHX (769,017), ATL (721,348), ORD (718,838) and LAS (686,362). Would’ve never guessed that order (or volume) in a million years… βοΈ

In my July 2023 post the art of being social, I wrote about the current state of social media and how things had changed for me personally with the deletion of my Twitter account and how I was using Mastodon as my primary remaining service. After finally getting an invite code to Bluesky, I’ve lurked on there for a few weeks now too. Here are a few updated thoughts:
- Aside from the presence of a few old Twitter people, not finding a lot of value so far in Bluesky.
- Looked at Threads and saw I needed to create a new Instagram account, so I deleted the app.
- Mastodon via Ivory still works great for me across iOS and macOS, but I’m finding that the time required to keep up isn’t equal to the value I’m getting out of the posts. Will curate my follow list and see if that helps.
- LinkedIn lately has been full of bad takes, unwanted sales generation and (apparently) fraud research, so it might need to go away again soon.
- Based on recent Google actions, may remove my concert videos from YouTube.
Leaning towards 7minutemiles being the exclusive, definitive source of online DK information soon…
No shortage of opinions on today’s Apple Event, but here are my immediate action items:
- Will move from my 14 Pro to the 15 Pro Max via the iPhone Upgrade Program on Friday (256GB Blue Titanium)
- Still want an Ultra 2, but don’t like the new bands – will stick with my Series 5 for now (and might actually prefer a Series 9 with a Nike band)
- Need to find out the pricing on the new iCloud+ 6TB and 12TB storage tiers (and how that ties in with Apple One) – rumor is $30/month and $60/month
- AirPods Pro cases get USB-C on September 22, but I will still probably wait for the 2nd edition of AirPods Max
Finished my third eight mile long run this morning and kept the average pace under 11 for the second time in this training cycle (10:44). Slow and steady with no walk breaks is fine with me right now. On my bike ride two days ago, I made it up the giant hill (200+ ft) with no stop breaks, so seem to be making overall fitness progress. Only 29 days to race day!
